Two main types of asphalt shingle

Most roofs in Simcoe County use one of two types of asphalt shingle. We help you choose the right one for your roof and budget.

Organic shingles

The traditional asphalt shingle, made by soaking a piece of heavy felt in tar. The tar makes them durable, water-repellent and able to stand up to the harsh climate we see around Barrie. The typical warranty for organic shingles is 10–25 years.

Fibreglass shingles

Fibreglass shingles look and feel just like organic shingles — the difference is inside, where non-woven glass fibres replace the felt. They resist heat, avoid curling and are less likely to catch fire or melt. In very cold climates they can become brittle, but they have become the preferred shingle among roofers in the Barrie area, with warranties reaching as high as 50 years.

Roof slope matters

The slope of your roof plays an important part in choosing the right shingle. Shallow-sloped roofs are more susceptible to ice and water damage because water drains away more slowly, so added protection is often recommended. We assess your roof and recommend the best system for it.
